PostHeaderIcon Come Travel Behind the Iron Curtain

One of my most memorable years of travel goes back 40 years.

In 1970, my wife and I decided to take a two (2) month vacation to Europe, and behind the Iron Curtain to Romania. After 26 years we are going home to the place of our birth, to see our family we had to leave so many years ago.

At that time I did not know anybody with experience on what it takes to travel behind the iron curtain, that left me with only one choice, to become my own expert travel agent. After months of planning, and research a plan was created.

Securing passports for my wife and son not yet 16 years of age was the easy part, I already had mine from the prior year. Next, Entry and Exit visas for two countries we have to travel through, not to hard to attain.

Our travel club took care of the flight tickets, so far, so good. In West Germany, at my brothers house, we established a Home Base from which we will have the freedom to come and go as we pleased.

How are we going to travel for two months? We have no knowledge of public transportation especially once we leave the West. Well we are going to rent an automobile for two months, much to expensive for our budget. In addition no one would lease us to travel behind the iron curtain.

Then, in an “AHA MOMENT,” in my research, I have discovered I can purchase an automobile from my local dealer here in America, and take delivery in Germany for almost the same price it would cost to lease for two months. One more thing, I am not license to drive in Europe, but I can get an International Driver’s Licence written in many foreign languages. No longer needed, today one can drive with an American divers licence world wide. ( European deliveries are still available today )

Luckily we found an BMW dealership close to our home, why an BMW, well many years ago I worked for the company in Germany so I knew of the reputation. There she was a 2800 CS two door sports model, with black interior leather bucket seats front and rear. The newest model the company had to offer. The dealer knew exactly how to accommodate our needs? Well our wants.

With our plan completed we are all excited, can’t wait for the day. The times prior to departure are the most exiting, the anticipation, the imagination we all have. After the fact, the memories, the experiences are equally worthy of what the joy of life is all about.

Finally this is the day! In my next segment, please stay tuned.
