The day of our arrival all my family and relatives came to see us, only one was missing Mama she has long since gone to be with the Lord. Today my wife our son my younger brother and I are going to see Mama at her eternal resting place. Seeing a likeness of her image embedded in her tombstone was a somber moment for me.

This was the image I remembered what she looked like the day I left home so many years ago.

As we all stood there each one of us in our own thoughts and prayers, a poem I have learned in grade school came to mind. The poem told about a warrior son after many years in battle returned home only find his mother has passed away. He too goes to visit his mothers resting place, as he stood there in silence with his head bowed for along time, suddenly in protest in a loud voice declares, ” No, this is not where the deceased rests, HOW CAN A PLACE OF SUCH CONFINE A MOTHERS LOVE CONTAIN.”. Today I too am this warrior asking the same question.

Before we ended our visit I requested to be alone with mama just the two of us. I had something to say, I needed closure I wanted to tell her I always loved her, and how sorry I was I could not be there for her in the time of her greatest need.. I prayed she could finally rest in peace. With this we parted never to return. The rest of the day we spend at home talking about our mama with father. We all needed a closure.

What life was like today needed no explanation the evidence became very clear. This region was once the bread basket of the nation and beyond. Today there is no bread, no meat, no milk the stores are empty. This is the workers paradise under this socialistic system. No private enterprise every body is working for the state. My wife and I tried to figure out how we can help my people. Our house had electricity one of very few in the town of 5000 population, I never dared to find out how they managed to get it.

One day we drove to the city (Arad) to do some shopping. We learned there is a shop where only foreigners could buy. That was great since our house had electric we bought a refrigerator, all the food we could find by any means we could master, Dollars and Deutschmarks where better then gold, we could bribe anybody. The only thing we needed to show is our passport and the money. One thing my father was once also a businessman. We had to keep our fingers clean, no politics just plain bartering. We had one problem the electricity was only on a few hours a day maybe? but we had faith it will work out. All the things we brought with us we naturally left also.

A neighbor lady invited me to visit her at the place of here employment. She was in charge of a workers hostel, that is where the truck and farm equipment drivers stayed when they came to town for harvest or make a delivery of goods. Not wanting to offend her as she showed me around I let her have the pleasure as a gentlemen and a guest. We had a couple of drinks, socialized as two friends would. When I left she presented me with a bottle of native brandy (tsuica) I don’t know if she wanted to impress me, or she needed a friend. To me it really did not matter, I appreciated her hospitality as a friend and neighbor.

A few of my school friends came to see me, they all looked old women and man alike. I was glad to see them but we had nothing much to say to each other. These where different people, haggard looking. In my heart I was sad this should not happen to humanity. Silently I prayed God please let this cup pass from me. Yes there where joyful moments I will treasure for life, but there where those times I would like to forget.

One thing I was not interested in to engage in politics, or to demonize, pass judgment on anybody or anything. To see my family again, try to help in anyway we could was all we wanted. I am sure just to be there with them even just for a few days lifted their spirits to.
