PostHeaderIcon Reunions, Gas Coupons, Survival and Fun

An old man opened the door, my wife introduced herself by her maiden name. After a brief conversation the man opened the large wooden portal and I drove in to the yard. Before I could even park and get out of the car, the whole family came out of the house in disbelieve.

This was the first of many reunions we had that I can only describe as indescribable. The joy of so many years to see each other again, although for me it was the first time to meet one of my wife’s relatives. This was once a wealthy family that owned a grocery store and a candy factory, today they barely owned this house. Their only daughter is a school principal, her husband a electrical engineer. They have two small children. For us, especially for our 16 year old American born son, this was to be an education for life. Read the rest of this entry »

PostHeaderIcon On Our Way But Not Yet Behind The Iron Curtain

Two weeks have now passed since we have arrived in Germany. We picked up our new  car at the factory. Did some shopping things we wanted to take along, particularly none perishable foods, medication and many items my family can really use. We learned more from people that went before us what to take, what to do and what not to do.

PostHeaderIcon The Royal Treatment The Iron Curtain Continued

Finally this is the day! We are beginning our two month trip to Europe and behind the Iron Curtain. Kennedy International Airport, in New York is the place of departure.

Thanks to our International Travel Club, all passengers are assembled. Remember this is a charter flight. from now on we are in the best hands you can be. Everything is taken care of: luggage, passports, tickets seats assigned, just get on board. The plane full to capacity. Tensions subdued, all is quiet as the engines start to scream and we are airborne up in to the clouds.

The PA breaks the silence as the captain welcomes us aboard also to announce we have reached the altitude of 40 thousand feet and are flying at 450 miles per hour. At that moment, as if by magic, the whole cabin exploded in music and song, the greatest party at 40 thousand feet altitude we have ever experienced! I would like to know what the cabin crew thought of what just happened.

Sunset got dimmer and the darkness took over. The party ended; we went to sleep. At midnight, we made a brief refueling stop in Reykjavik, Iceland. The next morning we landed in Stuttgart, Germany. Read the rest of this entry »
